Overview of Biochemistry:
The field of Biochemistry is one of the most vital and dynamic of the sciences. Rooted in the traditional areas of metabolism and nutrition. Biochemistry now extends to the newer fields of enzyme isolation, molecular structure, immunology and biological spectroscopy. It combines the molecular approach of chemistry with the breadth and diversity of biology. Biochemistry focuses on the interconversion of compounds in the many complex reactions of life, on the mechanisms whereby enzymes catalyze and regulate these reactions, and the function and the structure of the molecular components of living organisms. It continues to advance our understanding of how cells are constructed, how they function and communicate with each other, how genetic information is stored, expressed and passed on to the next generation and how all of the cell's chemistry is coordinated and controlled. Because it covers the spectrum of complexity from bacteria, yeasts and viruses to humans, and includes plants, biochemistry underpins other life sciences such as microbiology, physiology, zoology and botany as well as being a foundation subject for all the health sciences. This laboratory covers the following major research areas:
Oxidative stress and diseases:
The relationships between oxidative stress and diseases like cardiovascular diseases are under investigation in biochemistry laboratory. Survey of oxidant agents such as MDA (Malondiadldehyde), CD (Conjugated diens), Carbonyls, and Sulphydryls proteins, etc. is significantly important in evaluating affect of lipids and proteins oxidation in atherosclerosis development and understanding of pathological basis of these diseases.
Preparing laboratory kits:
Preparing laboratory kits are very important in clinical diagnosis. Making different Immunochemical, Enzymatic, and Chemical kits require separation and purification of different enzymes and biomolecules by Chromatography, Electrophoresis, Immunoblotting, etc. methods. In this area the objective of biochemistry laboratory is designing and developing new methods for preparing laboratory kits.
Evaluation of genetic indicators:
Association of genetic indicators such as Lp(a), apoA, Paraoxonase, and Homocystein phenotypes with some diseases like Coronary, artery diseases, Renal diseases and other related disorders are among major research topics of biochemistry laboratory.
